Safety Resources

Lovington Municipal Schools is deeply committed to creating a safe and secure learning environment through a comprehensive, multi-layered approach to school safety. At the core of this effort is the Standard Response Protocol (SRP), a nationally recognized emergency response system that uses clear, consistent directives—Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, and Shelter. These protocols are regularly practiced across all campuses to ensure students and staff are well-prepared.

The district works in close partnership with local law enforcement, using shared language and coordinated planning to ensure effective responses during emergency situations. To further enhance preparedness, the School Safety Team meets monthly with emergency management and law enforcement agencies to review, update, and strengthen safety procedures.

This page provides a range of resources for students, families, and staff—including the Say Something Anonymous Reporting System, which allows students to confidentially report concerns such as bullying, threats, or mental health needs. Together with routine safety drills, transparent communication via ParentSquare, and proactive planning, these layers reflect the district’s strong and ongoing commitment to the safety and well-being of every student.

SRP Protocols

  • Lockdown
“Locks, Lights, Out of Sight” Procedure: Move away from sight, maintain silence, lock door and do not open it.

Water Safety Curriculum

New Mexico House Bill 532 (HB0532), enacted in 2025, requires school districts to provide water safety instruction to students in kindergarten through grade twelve beginning in the 2025-2026 school year. This law intends to ensure that all students acquire fundamental knowledge and skills related to water safety, to reduce preventable injuries and fatalities associated with water-related accidents.

Lovington is a landlocked community with no access to public pools, swimming or public access to aquatic training facilities. Due to these limitations, students within our district do not have the opportunity to participate in formal swim lessons. In alignment with HB0532 and considering local resources and conditions, Lovington Municipal Schools will implement the American Red Cross “Water Safety” Units of Study for all students.

The American Red Cross General Water Safety curriculum is a nationally recognized and evidence-based program designed to teach students how to recognize, avoid, and respond to water hazards.

Elementary Water Safety Resource

Do Your Part, Be Water Smart introduces participants to basic guidelines and rules to help them be safer in, on, and around the water. It lays out foundational concepts that one should never be in, on or around the water alone and should only swim in areas designated for swimming and supervised by a capable adult water watcher and, where possible, lifeguards. This lesson will be taught annually to all students in grades K-5.

Secondary Water Safety Resource

In this general water safety lesson, students in grades 6–12 will learn how to stay safe in, on, and around water by exploring key concepts that help prevent drowning and promote responsible behavior. They will understand the importance of water safety training and how it can save lives. Students will be introduced to the Circle of Drowning Prevention and the Chain of Drowning Survival, learning how each step plays a role in emergency response.
